10 best screenshot APIs in 2026

A URL-to-PNG API is a small thing to do well, and most of them do it well. We tried the ones we could find and ranked them by what we think most people actually need.

Last updated January 2026. Pricing is current as of writing but always check each provider's page before you commit.

How we judged them

Five criteria, roughly equally weighted:

  1. Free tier — Is there one? Does it require a card? Is the quota usable?
  2. Price at scale — What does it cost per 1,000 screenshots once you're past the free tier?
  3. Render quality — Does it handle modern web pages (JS-heavy, infinite scroll, lazy-loaded images)?
  4. Latency — How long does the first request take? The second?
  5. Ease of integration — Can you go from "URL" to "PNG in my code" in 5 minutes?

The list

1. sitetrace — best free tier, best value for indie devs

100 calls/day with no signup. 1,000/day with just an email. $9/mo for 1k/day, $49/mo for 30k/day. Runs on Cloudflare's edge in 300+ cities. Real headless Chrome, all viewports, dark mode emulation, full-page capture.

Best for: indie devs, prototypes, link-in-bio tools, anything under 200k shots/mo.

2. Urlbox — best for enterprise + PDF + video

The OG. $49/mo for 5,000 shots/mo, $399/mo for 100k/mo. Best PDF rendering, has video recording, has a bulk API. The de-facto standard for "serious" use. No free tier.

Best for: teams that need PDF rendering, video, or a vendor with a 10-year track record.

3. ScreenshotAPI.net — simple, predictable pricing

From $9/mo for 1,000 screenshots. Up to $199/mo for 100k. Reliable, well-documented. No free tier but a 100-shot trial.

Best for: straightforward projects where you want a vendor that's been around a while.

4. ApiFlash — good UX, on Webkit

Uses Webkit (Safari's engine) instead of Chromium. Useful for testing what your site looks like on Safari. Pricing is similar to Urlbox.

Best for: teams that care about Safari rendering parity.

5. GoFullPage (Chrome extension, not API) — for one-off captures

Not an API. A free Chrome extension that screenshots the full page. The "free" tier of full-page captures, if you don't mind doing it manually.

Best for: one-off screenshots, blog post images, design references.

6. Microlink — has a generous free tier

100k requests/mo free. 250k/mo from $50. Returns a screenshot, OG metadata, and a PDF. Hosted on Cloudflare Workers. Open source.

Best for: OSS projects, low-volume personal tools.

7. Restpack — bundling approach

Screenshot + HTML-to-PDF + other tools in one subscription. From $9/mo for 5,000 calls/mo. Good if you also need PDF.

Best for: teams that need PDF too, and want one bill for both.

8. Page2Images — long in the tooth, but works

Around since 2012. Pricing is per-call, with a free tier of 100 calls/mo. UI is dated. Reliability is fine.

Best for: legacy integrations where you can't change vendors easily.

9. Screenshotmachine — pay-per-call, no subscription

$0.05 per screenshot at the lowest tier, going down to $0.003 at scale. No subscription, just buy a credit pack.

Best for: extremely low-volume use, or "I need 50 shots this one time".

10. self-host with Puppeteer — free, but…

You can run your own headless Chrome in a Docker container on a $5/mo VPS. Free at the software level, but you own all the ops: browser updates, memory leaks, scale, monitoring, security.

Best for: companies with strict data-residency requirements, or engineers who like running their own infrastructure.
